Modern Bass Fishing Tackle: How Technology Has Transformed the Sport

Bass lure fishing tackle has evolved at pace in recent years. Every item of tackle has been improved.

Saltwater rods are lighter and, in most cases, shorter and more fun to fish with. Better guides increase casting distance and give greater corrosion resistance. Saltwater reels are smaller and lighter again with better resistance to saltwater.

The line will be a technically advanced braided line that is a fraction of the diameter of the monofilament line it has replaced. This means a smaller reel can be successfully used. The minimal stretch braided line has gives you the opportunity to fish with much greater ‘feel’ and to work your lures in a very accurate and controlled manner.

Bass Conservation Rules in the UK: What You Need to Know

Due to improved conservation measures we are seeing increased populations right around the UK. These regulations include a closed season for retaining bass between the 1st February and the 31st March. During this period, you may still fish for bass on a catch and release basis.

For the rest of the year, you may take two bass per day provided they are at least 42cm in length, all bass smaller than this must be released unharmed. This size limit allows bass to reach sexual maturity and have the chance to reproduce.

These measures complement the bass conservation areas that exist around the coast and in estuaries. Further guidance for recreational bass fishing both generally and in relation to bass nursery areas can be found on the www.gov.uk website. These rules are liable to change so please check the current rules before fishing.
